Carpet, laminate, vinyl — every flooring project starts with the right measurements.

A Simple, Accurate Measuring Guide from Urmston Carpets

You will need a tape measure, pen or pencil and paper to hand.

Firstly, draw a simple plan of the room to put your sizes on.

When measuring a room, simply measure from the furthest skirting board at the longest and widest points of the room remembering to measure into the door-way as the room will be slightly wider there. Also, take care to measure into any bay windows and door frames when measuring the length, as carpet should end under a door.

Always add 5cm (2″) minimum to both the length and width of the carpet measurements.

The majority of carpets are 4 metres or 5 metres in width, if your room is slightly over this width don’t worry we can join the carpet professionally with heat seam tape.

When measuring your room, you should always ensure that you keep the flooring running in the same direction to maintain texture, pattern and colour consistency. If you change the direction then the pattern, texture and the pile of the carpet will reflect the light differently.

How to measure hall, stairs, and landings for carpet

Again you will need a tape measure, pen or pencil and paper to hand.

Firstly, draw a simple plan of the Hall to put your sizes on. Next, measure your hall as if it was a square room. Remember to measure into doorways and to maximum points in the hall.

Make sure when measuring the landing that you measure from the threshold of the door across the landing and over the nosing down onto the first step.

Note were the stairs meet the hall.

Always add 5cm (2″) minimum to the length and width of the carpet measurements.

How to measure stairs for carpet

Count and make a note of how many stairs there are. Next, measure the width and length of one step.

The most economical way to fit a stair carpet is to use the width of the carpet cut in strips down the length and fitted to the stairs with joins where the riser meets the step. Fitting in this way minimises wastage and ensures the pile runs in the same direction as the hall or landing, thereby avoiding shade variation. For ease, and if these are all the same, we just need this and the number of steps.

One of our qualified carpet estimators / fitter’s will be able to measure your hall, stairs and landing to minimise wastage and ensure a professional matched installation – especially if you are having a striped carpet and wish the pattern centralised on your staircase. However, if you can bring a rough plan to the shop it will greatly help us to work out a price before we come and measure.

Professional Measuring Available

For customers across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire, we can arrange a professional measuring service for complete peace of mind.

Tools You’ll Need to Measure

  • Tape measure (5m or longer)

  • Pen or pencil

  • Paper or a simple room sketch

  • Calculator (optional)

A smartphone photo of your room layout also helps us double-check everything for you.

Measuring for Different Flooring Types

  • Carpet Measuring

Carpet is cut from a roll, so width and length matter. We help ensure you choose the correct roll width (often 4m or 5m) to minimise joins.

    Laminate Measuring

Laminate requires precise area measurements plus an allowance for cuts and wastage — typically an extra 5–10%.

    Vinyl Measuring

Vinyl comes in set widths; we confirm which width is best based on your measurements.

If you’re unsure which flooring type fits your space best, we’re always happy to advise.

Tools You’ll Need to Measure

  • Tape measure (5m or longer)

  • Pen or pencil

Common Measuring Mistakes to Avoid

These mistakes cause most flooring order issues:

  • Forgetting to measure into recesses or doorways

  • Measuring only the “walkable area,” not the full room

  • Not adding allowances for pattern matching or cutting

  • Guessing instead of using a tape measure

  • Not including bay windows or alcoves

  • Incorrect stair measurements

Our team can review your measurements before you order to ensure everything is correct.

Measuring & How to Measure – Frequently Asked Questions

Measure the full width and full length of the room at the widest points, including alcoves, doorways and recesses. Carpet is usually supplied in fixed widths (e.g. 4m or 5m), so measuring the maximum dimensions ensures the carpet fits correctly.

Use the formula:
Length × Width = Total Area
Then check which carpet widths (e.g., 4m or 5m) will cover the space. Many carpets also come in multi widths such as 1m, 2.5m, 4m, 4.57m and 5m.
Always add a small allowance for trimming and accurate fitting.
If unsure — show us your measurements in store and we’ll calculate it for you.

The most frequent mistakes include:

  • Not measuring the widest/longest points

  • Forgetting Alcoves, bays or recesses

  • Not measuring into doorways

  • Estimating instead of using a tape measure

  • Incorrectly measuring stairs

  • Forgetting pattern-matching allowances

Avoiding these mistakes ensures you don’t under-order.

Measure:

  • The tread (flat part)

  • The riser (vertical section)
Add them together to get the total carpet needed for each step.
Then measure the width of the staircase.
Repeat for all steps, including winders and landings.
Our team can help confirm the measurements if needed.

Carpet is usually measured in square metres (m²) or square yards (yd2) but is sold in fixed widths ( e.g. 4m, 5m or multi width ).
Your measurements must match these standard widths to order correctly.

Measure the room’s longest length and widest width, including any recesses. Multiply them together for the total square metres.
